Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role
The Ministry of Education is seeking expression interest from suitably experienced candidates to be an Independent Adviser for the New Appointments National Panel (NANP). The New Appointments National Panel of independent education advisers led and managed by a Chair is contracted by the Ministry of Education. This panel supports Kāhui Ako by providing assurance that applicants have met the relevant national criteria for the appointment of Kāhui Ako roles.
This panel also advises boards of trustees of eligible schools seeking to offer the Principal Recruitment Allowance by providing assurance that applicants have met the relevant national criteria. This role is remunerated at a daily rate of $1,000 (per 8 hours), with an annual maximum income of $100,000.

Mōhou ake | About you
As an independent adviser you will join Kāhui Ako selection panels and/or be asked to work with school boards with significant challenges approved by the Secretary for Education to offer a Principal Recruitment Allowance. You will be tasked with affirming that successful applicants for the Kāhui Ako roles and allowances and Principal Recruitment Allowances have met the relevant criteria for the role.
Candidates are expected to have credibility and experience in the New Zealand education sector.
Candidates must also demonstrate a number of the following attributes:
- have demonstrated understanding of effective teaching, including collaborative practices
- have demonstrated understanding of teacher leadership, professional learning and appraisal
- have knowledge and proven experience of using standards/criteria (and other valued outcomes) to evaluate professional practice and developing and interrogating evidence that support those evaluations
- have demonstrated skills and knowledge as educational practitioners (principals/teachers/teacher educators)
- have successful proven practice lifting outcomes for children and young people, in particular Māori, Pasifika, students with special education needs and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
Also, panel members:
- should understand the centrality of the tamaiti, the value of involving whānau, and the importance of language, culture and identity
- may also be fluent in te reo Māori and conversant with tikanga in te ao Māori (i.e. mana reo and mana tikanga) - to enable them to work in immersion settings: for example, kura kaupapa wharekura, kura Māori ā-iwi, kura motuhake, and Māori immersion/bilingual units
- should have clear communication skills, adjusted to suit audience, and can articulate evidence-based assessment and evaluation judgments
- should work collaboratively and positively and alongside a range of stakeholders
- to support Principal Recruitment Allowance appointments in particular, will have experience of change management especially what is required for leadership to ‘turn around' a challenging school.
