The Position
As a Research Ontologist you will contribute to creating a consistent and semantically empowered data strategy and modelling paradigm. The candidate will have a passion for knowledge management and will be able to contribute to our FAIR initiative and ensure accuracy, consistency, and tractability across our data resources.
You will play a critical role in the modelling and management of data assets to help provide high-quality data that is easily accessible and consistent by applying FAIR principles.
Additionally, the candidate should possess practical experience as an Ontologist and Taxonomist with extensive experience creating knowledge models and controlled vocabularies while working within the context of regulatory guidelines.
This position will collaborate with the Data Stewardship and Semantic Integration teams to drive the terminological, ontological, and governance strategy that enables data reuse and the delivery of digital products.
Specifically, the Research Ontologist will be responsible for:
- Defining and designing ontologies, terminologies, semantic data models, and data standards to support business needs, making use of both in-house and open-source solutions.
- Implementing and supporting metadata and data management solutions and best practices.
- Collaborating frequently with research, clinical, and data scientists, data curators, ontologists, solution architects, and database specialists to gain an understanding of and demonstrate a need for semantic modelling.
- Developing customized ontologies/taxonomies and standards by identifying and enriching existing public models that suit the business needs using the semantic stack.
- Communicating the status of the ontology enrichment and integration along with milestones, key achievements, and roadblocks if any with stakeholders and leadership on a regular basis.
Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you should have:
- PhD with 3-4 years relevant experience or master’s with 5-7 years relevant experience or equivalent knowledge through relevant practical experience.
- OWL, RDF, RDFS, SPARQL as well as familiarity with full semantic Stack (including all w3c standards).
- Knowledge of publicly available Ontologies, specifically in the healthcare arena, such as MeSH, SNOMED, ICD9/10, MedDRA, CheBi.
- Experience working with Computational Linguistics, NLP and machine learning frameworks, Natural Language ontologies, data and data automation workflows and expertise in Natural Language Grammar.
- Familiarity with API standards such as OpenAPI. Version control using Git, subversion or an equivalent tool. Issue tracking with Jira or Azure DevOps.
- Experience with Python, JavaScript/React or similar.
- Familiarity with Knowledge Graphs and Graph Databases / RDF stores (neo4j, stardog, Neptune, etc).
This position demands the ability to persuade individuals with diverse interests to embrace new concepts, practices, and approaches. You should excel in presenting compelling arguments within your area of expertise, even when faced with disagreements. Exceptional skills in global and cross-functional stakeholder management are essential.

The main duties of the Data Governance and Ontology team involve collaborating with various departments at Novo Nordisk to advance capabilities in utilizing and reusing cross-domain knowledge. This effort plays a crucial role in facilitating informed decision-making and promoting discovery within the organization.
Digital Science & Innovation (DSI) is supporting the digital journey across all our therapy areas in R&ED. In DSI, we work in multidisciplinary teams – in strong collaboration with all areas across R&ED and R&ED IT. We participate in drug development projects across the value chain, from early discovery to pre-clinical development.
